Spanning Q3 2022 Roundup: Feature Releases and Innovations
What’s new with Spanning Backup?
Here at Spanning, we constantly strive to give our users the very best product experience possible. We are relentlessly innovating our solutions to optimize features, functionality, security and user experience. While we do this, we release feature updates as soon as they are completed and tested rather than waiting for lengthy release windows or service packs. Occasionally, you may have missed or lost track of all our latest and greatest changes. Here’s a look back at some of the new capabilities and innovations we’ve made in Q3 2022 that will further amplify your data protection efforts.
Spanning Backup for Microsoft 365
Spanning enables daily, automated backup for your Microsoft 365 environment, including Mail, Contacts, Calendars, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams. Here’s what’s new:
Canadian data center launched
Why? Data is more valuable than ever before. Many organizations and industries adhere to strict data sovereignty and compliance. Therefore, they must maintain control over encryption and access to data, including the physical geographic location in which the data is stored.
In September, Spanning launched a brand-new data center in Canada to enable Canadian-based organizations to store backups in-country. With this launch, Spanning now supports four global regions: the United States, Europe (Dublin), Asia Pacific (Sydney, Australia) and Canada.
Support for SharePoint multi-geo capabilities
Why? Users can leverage multi-geo capabilities to control shared resources like SharePoint team sites through the SharePoint Admin Center. Each site has a Preferred Data Location (PDL) that determines the geo-location where related data is stored. SharePoint sites can be stored in specific geo-locations to meet data residency requirements, and different administrators may be specified for each geo-location.
Spanning Backup is pleased to announce support for SharePoint multi-geo setups.
Why? Spanning has long offered unlimited retention and unlimited storage for your backups. However, unlimited retention may not be the right choice for every organization. Retaining data you don’t need beyond its useful lifecycle is an unnecessary legal and compliance risk. It also makes searching for the right files more difficult and may result in someone restoring data they shouldn’t bring back.
With our new one-year retention, you have more options to balance retention requirements and cost for your Microsoft 365 backups. Spanning retention settings apply strictly to Spanning backups; they do not affect production data or versioning settings within Microsoft.
Other news and notables
- Spanning Backup now offers export functionality for SharePoint backups. You may export or download data directly from Spanning and restore it into your Microsoft 365 environment.
- We have invested in improving data center performance for SharePoint and OneDrive backups and are seeing up to a 20% boost in performance.
Spanning Backup for Google Workspace
Google Workspace users can protect Mail, Drive, Calendar, Contacts and Sites with daily, automated backup from Spanning. Here’s what’s new:

Spanning Backup for Salesforce
Spanning enables fast, automated and reliable backup and recovery for your Salesforce org to eliminate lengthy, complex and manual backup and recovery processes. Here’s what’s new:
Bulk API v2
Why? In some circumstances, an environment is so large or the rates of change so significant that the normal REST API capacity cannot keep up. In these cases, Spanning can utilize Bulk API methods to process large backups of data for backup.
It’s important to note:
- Bulk queries are metered separately and differently from REST queries.
- Bulk queries are measured and limited by the hour.
- Our v2 optimizations significantly reduce the number of total Bulk API calls required to back up a large environment or data set.

Improved support for repairing Lookup Relationships
Why? When a record is deleted (for example, an Account), all child records (Contacts, Opportunities, etc.) will also be deleted, resulting in a catastrophic cascade of deletions. Spanning enables you to recover a deleted parent record and all its child records with a single restore. In Salesforce, this relationship is known as a “Master-Detail” relationship.
Sometimes, a Salesforce record relies on information contained in other records, usually obtained through a “Lookup Relationship.” Lookup relationships rely on Salesforce’s data model and require the Record ID to be used successfully. When a record is deleted, the relationship breaks. Not only is the primary record deleted, but other records relying on the information within may be impacted. Restoring a record via the API will generate a brand-new record ID, effectively creating two different records in your system.
With Spanning, you can automatically update and repair any broken relationships in Salesforce to point to the newly restored record with a single click. All records relying on the original record can be updated to reference the new address.
Why? Data you no longer need is an inherent risk. By default, Spanning offers unlimited retention for your Salesforce backups.
Self-service deletion gives you additional control over your backups and can be applied when handling single or multiple records. You can:
Overwrite: This operation overwrites all data values with fake data while preserving Salesforce’s data structure. This is the preferred way to perform a GDPR request.
- Strings are overwritten with “XXXXXXXXXXXX”
- Numbers are overwritten with 0
- Booleans are overwritten with false
- Blobs are overwritten with a file containing the string “This file has been overwritten as part of a GDPR request”
Delete: This operation removes the records themselves and their children. This does impact the data structure. Counters (counts of saved record, deleted record, etc.) will not be changed.
It’s important to note that performing the deletion operation may impact the ability to perform restores if dependent child records are removed. These processes impact no Salesforce production data; they apply strictly to Spanning Backups.
